Joseph Paradiso

Joseph Paradiso is the Alexander W. Dreyfoos (1954) Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where he directs the Responsive Environments group and serves as Academic Head. A pioneer in the Internet of Things, Paradiso’s work spans sensor networks, wearable sensing, energy harvesting, and human-computer interaction.

Paradiso’s current research explores how sensor networks and AI can augment and mediate human experience, interaction, and perception, with applications ranging from ubiquitous computing and sensate materials to digital twins and interactive media. He has authored more than 400 publications and holds approximately 30 U.S. patents.

Paradiso is also a longtime electronic musician and instrument designer who has built an extensive custom modular synthesizer system featured in installations worldwide. He holds a PhD in Physics from MIT and is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
