Skylar Tibbits

Skylar Tibbits is a designer, computer scientist, and Associate Professor of Design Research in MIT’s Department of Architecture. He is founder and co-director of the Self-Assembly Lab and directs the department’s undergraduate Design programs. His research explores self-assembly, programmable materials, and adaptive systems within the built environment.

Tibbits’ work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including MoMA, Centre Pompidou, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. He is the author of Things Fall Together: A Guide to the New Materials Revolution and Self-Assembly Lab: Experiments in Programming Matter, and serves as Editor-in-Chief of 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing.

Tibbits holds master’s degrees in design computation and computer science from MIT and a professional degree in architecture from Philadelphia University. His work has received numerous honors, including the Architectural League Prize, Ars Electronica Next Idea Award, National Geographic Emerging Explorer recognition, and a TED Senior Fellowship.
